Small Grant, Big Heart: Community, Government and Local Business Partner to Strengthen Volunteer Safety

Volunteering North Queensland Inc (VNQ) is celebrating a powerful example of community collaboration, with Federal Government support and local business stepping up together to deliver a long-term safety solution for volunteers and the wider community.

VNQ was successful in securing a $2,500 Volunteer Grant through the Federal Government’s Volunteer Grants Program, supported by Phillip Thompson OAM MP, Federal Member for Herbert. The funding contributes to strengthening volunteer capability and improving community safety outcomes.

The Volunteer Grants Program, administered by the Department of Social Services, supports not-for-profit organisations to remove barriers to volunteering, encourage participation and strengthen community connectedness.

However, shortly after the grant was approved, the original supplier for essential lifesaving equipment went into liquidation, meaning the grant alone was no longer sufficient to cover the cost.

That’s when local business stepped in.

Townsville small business owner James Overall, from Overall Health Care, partnered with VNQ to ensure the organisation could still secure a defibrillator, delivering a vital long-term safety solution for volunteers, staff and the broader community., In addition doubled the amount of First Aid Training, which enabled VNQ to host 2 sessions for our Volunteers.

Phillip Thompson OAM MP said the outcome demonstrated the very best of community spirit.

“Volunteer organisations like Volunteering North Queensland are the backbone of our community. This grant is about supporting the people who give their time to make Townsville a better place to live, work and play. Seeing government support combined with local business generosity is exactly how strong communities are built.”

James Overall said supporting VNQ was a natural decision.

“As a small business, this is my way of giving back. Volunteers do so much for our community, and if we can help keep people safe while they’re giving their time, then that’s something I’m proud to be part of.”

VNQ President Anne Camplin said the partnership highlights how small investments, when combined with local support, can deliver lasting impact.

“We are incredibly grateful for the Federal Government’s support through the Volunteer Grants Program and for James stepping in when we needed it most. This is a perfect example of community, government and local business working together to create real outcomes.”
