Celebrating International Volunteer Day 2025

Volunteers, volunteer-involving organisations, state government MPs and local government representatives came together on 4 December to celebrate International Volunteer Day 2025 with Volunteering North Queensland.

The event celebrated the extraordinary contribution of volunteers worldwide and reinforced an important message that every act of volunteering, no matter how small, strengthens communities and creates meaningful change.

This year’s International Volunteer Day theme, “Every Contribution Matters,” was beautifully brought to life by guest speaker Jach Marsden, an inspiring 11-year-old youth volunteer. In his short but impactful volunteering journey, Jach and his family have knitted more than 100 beanies for people experiencing homelessness and for premature babies across Townsville and surrounding communities; a remarkable achievement that captured hearts across the room.

The joint International Volunteer Day and Christmas celebration was generously hosted by VNQ members, the Cowboys Community Foundation, at the Cowboys NRL House. Guests enjoyed a BBQ breakfast, entertainment and lucky door prizes in a warm, festive atmosphere that reflected the spirit of giving and community.

Jach’s story and passion for helping others deeply resonated with attendees, inspiring all who heard him speak. His kindness, dedication and willingness to give his time demonstrated the powerful impact volunteering can have, at any age.

International Volunteer Day, designated by the United Nations in 1985 and officially observed on 5 December, recognises the vital role volunteers play across the globe. The celebration was a fitting tribute to the individuals and organisations who give so generously to support their communities.
