Kim Borkowski – Event Manager

Kim is excited to bring Volunteering North Queensland’s conference vision to fruition in 2020 and beyond, as well as delivering other events throughout the year, to support volunteer managers and NFP organisations.

Kim has 20 years of experience in the events, entertainment and marketing industries in government departments and private enterprise. Her work includes being part of the team that delivered the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Marketing and Promotions Officer at Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE and Event and Protocol Officer with Townsville City Council.

Liz Greenwood

Community Engagement Facilitator at Cootharinga North Queensland.

Liz originally hails from Newcastle, where she studied and had a career in entertainment and event management. She moved to Townsville in March 2017, where she had a complete career change and became the Community Engagement Facilitator for Cootharinga North Queensland, a not for profit disability service provider. In this role, Liz manages volunteers across North Queensland. She absolutely loves the interaction and day to day life as a volunteer coordinator and is thrilled to be able to represent the volunteering community through VNQ. Liz has extensive first-hand experience volunteering across a range of roles, in the music, event and not-for-profit industries. She has a great respect for volunteers, and is passionate about providing new opportunities for the volunteering community



Madeleine Rudge

Madeleine was born and raised in Townsville. She has a bachelor of laws-arts from James Cook University. Madeleine began volunteering in her early uni days. Most of her volunteering work has been supporting people at court and tutoring Indigenous high school students. She has worked as a volunteer manager since 2014. She currently manages the Townsville Court Network service and volunteers as a tutor with Cowboys House. Madeleine is passionate about engaging young people in volunteering and building volunteer workforces that span generations and experiences.

Natalie Dukes – Business Development Officer

Natalie is passionate about providing great group volunteering opportunities to North Queensland companies and organisations.  As VNQ’s Business Development Officer, Natalie collaborates with our not for profit members to create experiences that align with your business values, goals and Corporate Social Responsibility Program.   Natalie has 15 years’ experience in relationship management over a variety of sectors from construction to travel and tourism so she can always find something to talk about!  Natalie can be frequently spotted out and about having coffee or exploring the region’s diversity with two children in tow.

Shane Harris – Manager

Shane has 20 years of experience working in the not-for-profit sector in a range of roles from frontline service to management including in his previous role as VNQ’s Marketing & Training Coordinator. As VNQ’s Manager, Shane is excited about the opportunity to lead the VNQ team to equip the community sector with more volunteers and provide training opportunities to resource service providers. Shane is a family guy who enjoys a variety of fitness pursuits including swimming, cycling, running and kayaking.

Cr Maurie Soars

Maurie Soars has a Diploma in Business Management from Harvard. He has held a number of directorships in both public and private companies and has owned and operated a number of companies.

A serving Councillor for the City of Townsville, Maurie still conducts fund raisers for various charities including Prostrate Cancer, Blue on Blue and One Punch Can Kill.

For his contribution to the Townsville community through volunteer roles, Maurie has received the following awards:

  • Townsville City Lions FC Volunteer of the year
  • Townsville AFL Volunteer of the Year
  • AFL Queensland Volunteer of the Year
  • North Queensland Sporting Administrator of the Year
  • Australia Day Awards Townsville Sporting Administrator of the Year
  • Townsville City Council Sporting Administrator of the Year
  • AFL Masters Volunteer of the Year

Ernie Bunt – Treasurer

Born in Emerald, Queensland, Ernie completed Primary school there and some Secondary school at North Rockhampton High. He has held various jobs over the years including tradesman in the Railway and 20 years in the Service Industry finishing as a Regional Manager for P&O Services with a budget of $12-15 million. He has also spent 10 years in the Youth Welfare System and 25 years in the Scout Movement, of which the last 20 years has been as Regional Commissioner and a member of the State Management.

Denise Lumsden

Originally from Western Australia, Denise is a qualified accountant with extensive experience working in Finance and Human Resource roles.  With a diverse background including mining and resources companies, engineering and the education sector, Denise is currently employed as the Program Manager at Ronald McDonald House North Australia.

Denise has volunteered with St Johns Ambulance Service in the past and whilst living overseas spent time working with West African orphanages, schools and local midwives to understand the challenges they face. As an active volunteer at Southern Cross Catholic College, as a past Board member and most recently as President of the Parents and Friends Association, Denise has also had experience volunteering with St Vincent de Paul and St Brigid’s Catholic Church parish.

Denise values the contributions that volunteers make to the North Queensland community and is an advocate promoting positive youth volunteering experiences.

Patricia Ross – Secretary

For 35 years Patricia was employed as a Private Secretary in four different countries, i.e. New Zealand, England, Zimbabwe and Australia.  In Townsville she established a Secretarial Service in 1990 which operated through to 1995.  The business involved minute taking, resumes, job applications and selection criteria.  She was invited to become a part-time Training and Development Officer with Thuringowa Job Training Centre in 1992.  This followed with employment at TAFE in both Home Hill and Townsville as a Business Studies and Information Technology teacher from 1995 to 2000.  From 2001 to 2013 Patricia owned and operated a 28 room motel and 40 powered site caravan park in Normanton, hosting workers, tourists, tour buses and ‘grey nomads’. Patricia is now retired and resides at Toomulla Beach.

Emily Sehu – Vice President

Emily, born in Malaysia, arrived in Australia for her tertiary education in 1996. Being of Malaysian Chinese decent, is fluent in various languages and dialects including English, Bahasa Malaysia, Cantonese, Mandarin, Hokkien and has previously studied Spanish and beginners Nepali. Emily currently holds the position as the Deputy General Counsel of the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS). Prior to moving in-house, Emily was in private legal practice in Australia and overseas specialising in Intellectual Property and litigation. Since arriving in Townsville in 2008, Emily has been involved in various community events as a volunteer including Townsville’s Christmas event, Stable on the Strand, as organiser of the Preview Night for various years, undertaking administration tasks and assisting with guest artists. Emily has also volunteered to assist members of the community with odd jobs in their homes through the Neighbour to Neighbour initiative by the Combined Churches of Townsville. Emily regularly volunteers in church and supports community events such as the AIMS Open Day, Walk for Freedom A21 campaign and various Townsville theatre groups by attending local productions. Emily appreciates the importance of the volunteer sector and volunteering as a very effective way to assimilate and contribute to the community. Emily’s professional role equips her with skills for building teams and providing leadership.
